Your team dashboard has fourteen tiles on it. Total signups since launch. Page views. Followers. Downloads to date. Every one of them is up and to the right, the weekly meeting spends nine minutes admiring them, and nobody leaves the room with anything to do.
A number earns its tile when it is specific, comparable over time, and tied to an action. Specific means one thing is being counted, not a bundle of loosely related things. Comparable means this week can be set against last week. Tied to an action means that when it moves, somebody changes what they do on Monday. A vanity metric fails the action test, and usually the comparison test too.
